PaperPort 3.0.2  driver for Windows

This README document contains late-breaking news regarding PaperPort 3.0.2 driver for Windows

If you are getting the message "Unable to communicate with modem, another application is using the port."  Or another message that says the port can not be used or found, you will need to modify the PPORTDRV.INI file.   Here are the steps:

First copy the PPORTDRV.DRV file from the floppy to your system:

If using WINDOWS 95:

Restart the computer in DOS mode by clicking on START then SHUT DOWN and select RESTART THE COMPUTER IN MS-DOS MODE. When at the C:\ prompt, type CD  \PAPRPORT  and press the ENTER key. Now type  RENAME   PPORTDRV.DRV  PPORTDRV.ORG and press the ENTER key. Next type  COPY A:\PPORTDRV.DRV  and press the ENTER key. (If your floppy drive is B, then type COPY B:\PPORTDRV.DRV and press
ENTER) Type  EXIT to return to Windows 95.   If this doesn't restart Windows, then just press ALT-CTRL-DEL keys at the same time.

If using WINDOWS 3.1

Exit out of Windows.  At  the C:\ prompt, type CD  \PAPRPORT  and press the ENTER key. Now type  RENAME   PPORTDRV.DRV  PPORTDRV.ORG and press the ENTER key. Next type  COPY A:\PPORTDRV.DRV  and press the ENTER key. (If your floppy drive is B, then type COPY B:\PPORTDRV.DRV  and press ENTER) Press ALT-CTRL-DEL to reboot the computer and enter Windows as your normally do

Next edit the PPORTDRV.INI file:

1.  Locate the port the modem is using.

2.  Double Click on the PPORTDRV.INI file (default location is in C:\PAPRPORT\DATA) for editing.

3.  Edit the line located in the [Features] section "NoDetOnCom=0" replacing 0 with the modem's port number. For example, if the modem is on Com2, the new line should read "NoDetOnCom=2."

4.  Save and exit from the file PPORTDRV.INI.

5.  Restart Windows.

A. Other Troubleshooting Tips

Possible Mouse or Modem Hangs on Windows 95 systems:

On some Windows 95 systems the serial ports may be affected by our installation.   This is most noticeable when either a mouse or a modem stops functioning. This is caused by Windows 95 locking com port resources which, in turn, disallows our attempt at resetting the com port resources.   This can be overcome by the following steps:

1.  Enter the System settings box (Start-Settings-Control Panel-System).

2.  Enter the Device Manager section.

3.  Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) section.

4.  Select the com port where PaperPort is located (This can be found in PaperPorts Settings- Scanner- Setup box as "Port").

5.  Open the properties box for that port. Uncheck the Original Configuration (Current) box.

6.  Click OK out of all boxes to save the setting.

7.  Restart Windows 95 for the new settings to take effect.

Temporarily Exchanging the Scanner for Another Device:

On PCs with few communication ports it may become necessary to disconnect the PaperPort scanner from a serial com port in order to use another device such as a modem on that port.  The following outlines the procedures required (depending on operating system software installed).

To Exchange the Scanner on a Windows 95 machine:

If you have performed the steps listed in the troubleshooting section  "Possible Mouse or Modem Hangs on Windows 95 systems" you will have to back out those changes.   Follow the same procedure this time checking the box marked as "Original Configuration (Current)." To remove the scanner perform the following:

1.  Open PaperPorts Settings-Scanner-Setup dialog box and check the box marked as "Temporarily Disable Scanner."

2.  Disconnect the scanner's cable from the computer's serial com port.

3.  Plug in the new device and perform the required installation procedures for that device.
4.  See NOTE 1 under "To Exchange the Scanner on a Windows 3.x Machine."

In order to reconnect the scanner, simply remove the other device, reconnect the scanner and restart Windows.

To Exchange the Scanner on a Windows 3.x Machine:

PaperPort removes the requirements of an IRQ for the serial com port that the scanner is connected to.  This is done in order not to conflict with other serial com ports that may need the same IRQ. This will need to be undone in order for another device to use the same com port. The default IRQ and addresses for each of the 4 Windows controlled serial com ports are as follows:
Com1IRQ= 4 and address 3F8.
Com2IRQ= 3 and address 2F8
Com3IRQ= 4 and address 3E8
Com4IRQ= 3 and address 2E8

If you noticed that com1 and com3 have the same IRQ number you are correct.  The same is also true for com2 and com 4.   This IRQ sharing can be an infinite frustration for unsuspecting persons wishing to use ports that share IRQs.  PaperPort removes this IRQ requirement by replacing the original IRQ with a  -1.   Unfortunately, now that the IRQ has been disabled, a device that requires an IRQ for this port will not function properly.  Disabling the IRQ is done in the SYSTEM.INI under the [386Enh] section, as the line "Com#IRQ=-1", where # is the number of the port the scanner is connected to. To temporarily use this port for another device replace the -1 for the IRQ number that is required for that com port (see com port configuration chart above.) Be aware that once this -1 is replaced any original conflicts with this port will reoccur.

Once the IRQ has been replaced all that needs to be done is to replace the scanner with the new device and restart Windows. To replace the scanner with the new device, do the following:

1.  Open PaperPorts Settings-Scanner-Setup box and check the box marked as "Temporarily Disable Scanner."

2.  Disconnect the scanner's cable from the computer's serial com port.

3.  Plug in the new device and perform required installation procedures for that device.

4.  Restart Windows. See NOTE 1.

In order to reconnect the scanner just simply remove the other device, reconnect the scanner and restart Windows.

NOTE 1 - If the new device requires that Windows be restarted in order to connect be aware that our scanner will attempt to reconnect during the Windows restart.   This process may take up to a few minutes after which a message box may appear giving options for scanner detection.   Press Cancel in this message box then press OK in the next message box to allow the temporary loss of  connection.  If  the scanner is removed often  both of  these connection error boxes can be disabled through the scanner Setup dialog box.  To disable these messages start the PaperPort software and enter Settings-Scanner-Setup box and check the box labeled "Disable Scanner Not Found Warning."
